Candles, Lights and Fireworks: A Safe Festive Season

White candles on a wooden table

Christmas trees, candles, string lights and New Year's Eve fireworks make December cosy and festive, and also one of the busiest periods for the fire service. Most festive accidents are easy to prevent.

Here is how to enjoy the season and stay safe.

1. Candles

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended, and put candles out before you leave the room or go to sleep.
  • Place them on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from curtains, paper and decorations.
  • Keep candles out of reach of children and pets.
  • Consider battery-powered LED candles, especially near trees and decorations.

2. Christmas Trees and Lights

  • Keep a real tree watered, and keep it well away from heaters and fireplaces.
  • Check lights and cables for damage before you use them, and use only lights that carry the CE mark.
  • Do not overload sockets or extension cords.
  • Switch off lights when you go to bed or leave the house.

3. Cooking and Gatherings

  • Stay in the kitchen while you cook with oil, fat or a gourmet set.
  • Keep a fire blanket within reach in the kitchen and make sure everyone can find it.
  • Make sure smoke alarms work before guests arrive.
  • Know your escape routes and keep them clear of coats, bags and decorations.

4. Fireworks on New Year's Eve

  • Check the latest government and municipality rules on consumer fireworks, which are being tightened in the Netherlands. Only set them off where and when it is allowed.
  • Buy only from authorised sellers and follow the instructions on the packaging.
  • Keep a safe distance, wear safety glasses and never relight a dud.
  • Keep pets indoors in a quiet, familiar room, and prepare for children who are frightened by the noise.

5. If Something Goes Wrong

If a fire starts and you cannot put it out immediately, get everyone out, close the door and call 112 from outside. For burns, cool the skin under cool running water for at least ten minutes and seek medical help for anything serious. Keep a first aid kit where you can find it. A LifeBag includes a first aid kit, a flashlight and a whistle, and is easy to grab on your way out.
