Older relatives are often the most affected when something goes wrong. A power cut can stop a stair lift, a medical device or the heating, and many older people live alone or depend on digital services they cannot reach without power.
These steps help you prepare together, without making anyone anxious.
1. Start With a Conversation
- Talk about it calmly and as a practical matter, not as a worry.
- Ask what would be hardest for them during a power cut or evacuation.
- Agree who will check on them, and how often during a crisis.
2. Medication and Health
- Keep at least a week of regular medication, in the original packaging.
- Keep a written list of medication, allergies, conditions and the contact details of the GP and pharmacy.
- Check backup power or batteries for any medical devices, and ask the supplier what to do in a power cut.
- Keep spare glasses, hearing aid batteries and walking aids easy to reach.
3. Make the Home Safer
- Keep torches in every room and by the bed, so no one has to search in the dark.
- Clear walkways and stairs, and keep shoes close to the bed.
- Make sure smoke alarms work and a carbon monoxide alarm is installed if there is a gas appliance.
- Keep warm blankets and clothing within reach.
4. Keep Communication Simple
- Write key phone numbers in large print and keep them by the phone and in the emergency bag.
- Agree a simple code or routine, for example a daily call or a message by a set time.
- Keep a battery radio, as many older people do not rely on apps for news.
- Include neighbours in the plan so someone is always nearby.
5. Prepare a Grab-and-Go Bag
If they have to leave at short notice, a packed bag by the door makes it far easier. Choose a bag that is light enough to carry, and add personal items such as medication, documents and spare clothes. A LifeBag Basic is a compact choice that covers water, food, light, first aid and a radio, with room for the personal extras.
